SUPREME ISTHMUS / 8 VS 8 / POSITIONS

Every position,
explained.

Eight positions, eight jobs.
What players say each one does,
next to what the games show.

The advice is what players on r/beyondallreason say, in our words, with links to the threads. The timings are measured from high-rated games. About the names. Each base has a cove on one side and a long beach on the other. The Suicide front and Geo sea play on the cove side, the Front and Beach sea on the long beach side. Tech and Eco are the same position. Some older posts call the Geo sea the long sea and the Beach sea the short sea.

POSITION 1 and 9 ON THE MAP

Geo sea

Sea, cove side. The sea that has a geothermal.

The job

Holds the sea on the cove side. It has more land mexes and a geothermal than the other sea, but a slower start: it needs a bot lab before it can build a shipyard.

Players advise a constructor and a coastal torpedo launcher before the shipyard, so early enemy boats cannot punish the slow start.

Then take the island, fortify the cove and put the income into boats. Keep rez subs working. If the sea is lost, defend the short beach or switch to amphibious units.

Common mistakes

  • Spending on extra build power or tidals instead of boats.
  • Building the shipyard with nothing to defend it from the first enemy boats.

Works with. Protects the coastal bases, including the Suicide front.

Players disagree on. Most now call it the stronger of the two seas; it was made stronger in late 2025 and used to be the weaker one.

A few threads agree. On r/beyondallreason: How to not throw sea on isthmus? (Sep 2026) · Isthmus geo sea hate thread (Apr 2026) · Is Isthmus beach sea vs geo sea balanced? (Nov 2025)

POSITION 2 and 10 ON THE MAP

Tech (Eco)

Eco. Players use both names for the same position.

The job

Get the T2 lab up as fast as you can without stalling: under 4:00 in the best lobbies.

Then hand out T2 constructors: the first to Air at about 5:00, the second at about 7:00, and everyone who needs one by about 10:00. The usual order is Air (or Geo, if Geo pays for it), both seas, then Pond. The fronts only if Geo does not cover them.

Early on, Tech also gives Air a T1 constructor, around 1:30. Upgrade your teammates’ mexes before your own economy, then build up and make the anti-nuke.

When players say "shop is open", they mean: send metal for a T2 constructor.

Common mistakes

  • Giving out one constructor, then reclaiming the lab to build economy.
  • Going for T3 too early.
  • Forgetting the anti-nuke.

Works with. The whole team sends it metal and gets T2 from it.

Players disagree on. Whether teammates must pay before Tech hands out a constructor.

POSITION 3 and 11 ON THE MAP

Air

The job

Early transports and scouts, and fighters for the seas when they go for the island. The seas usually pay in wind.

Keep a few Shurikens or gunships ready for leaks, scout the enemy (their Geo above all), hold fighters against bombers, escort your team’s transports and help the seas with torpedo bombers.

Air gets the first T2 constructor from Tech.

Common mistakes

  • A ball of fighters that does nothing.
  • Reacting slowly to enemy bombers.
  • Not scouting.
  • Building fighters without a plan, or too much economy, and falling behind.

Works with. Serves every position: transports for Geo’s T2 units, air cover for the seas and the fronts.

A few threads agree. On r/beyondallreason: Air should pay for the cons Tech gives them (Sep 2025) · Looking for air advice (Oct 2025) · I am the worst Air player on your team (Oct 2025)

POSITION 4 and 12 ON THE MAP

Pond

The job

Boost both fronts at the start. The usual is 4 tidals for each front ("4/4"); some also give 2 to Geo. Boosting with wind works too when the wind is above about 10.

Then take your mexes, build a lab and send T1 units or cheap spam to the front, timed for about 6:00, when Geo’s T2 units arrive.

Pond buys its T2 constructor from Tech, and often sends Tech its spare metal.

Common mistakes

  • Playing Pond as a second economy position.
  • Filling the whole pond with tidals.
  • Leaving the commander idle.

Works with. Supports both fronts, relies on Geo’s early T2 units, and can help the cove-side sea with torpedo launchers.

Players disagree on. Tidal or wind boost, and how much to build up after the boost.

Many agree on the boost; opinions split on what comes after. On r/beyondallreason: Any tips for playing pond on isthmus? (Sep 2025) · A brief guide to Supreme Isthmus meta for new players (Aug 2025) · Are tidals a noob trap? (Oct 2025) · A guide for every position on Isthmus (Jul 2026)

POSITION 5 and 13 ON THE MAP

Suicide front

Front, cove side. Also the short front, the close front or the suicide spot.

The job

The front-most position. Pond boosts you, so build little energy of your own.

Common openings: 1 mex then the lab; 1 mex and the forward mex, then the lab; or 3 mex then the lab (slower).

Get rez bots out, fight for the middle early (roughly 1,000 to 1,500 metal of wreckage to reclaim there), stop leaks, and hold until Geo’s T2 units arrive.

It is called suicide because the spot is thin, falls to pushes, and gets shelled from the sea if your cove-side sea is lost.

Common mistakes

  • Walking the commander to the front with no army, then leaving it idle.
  • An idle factory, or too little build power.
  • Staying on Pawns too long; rocket bots do better once the lanes close.

Works with. Depends on Pond’s boost, Geo’s T2 units and the cove-side sea holding.

Players disagree on. Whether to build 2 constructors first or be first to the middle.

A few threads agree. On r/beyondallreason: How to survive Supreme's suicide spot (Mar 2026) · A brief guide to Supreme Isthmus meta for new players (Aug 2025) · Isthmus meta, please explain (Nov 2025)

POSITION 6 and 14 ON THE MAP

Front

Front, long beach side. Also the long front or the second front.

The job

The same job as the Suicide front, from further back: safer, but with a wider gap to cover.

Send the first units to the coast to stop leaks, then move up to the middle as a line once you have 3 or 4.

Common mistakes

  • Too much energy early. Most say 1 solar and 2 wind, not 3 solar.

Works with. Shares Pond’s boost. Who gives it a T2 constructor, Geo or Tech, depends on the lobby.

POSITION 7 and 15 ON THE MAP

Geo

The job

Rush T2 with the geothermal and bring the team’s first T2 units to the front: long-range units with radar and a jammer, such as Mausers or Quakers, Banishers, a Fatboy, a Tzar or Sharpshooters.

Buy a transport from Air to get them there fast, and control them carefully.

Then make T2 constructors for yourself and, in most accounts, for both fronts. In higher-rated games Geo sometimes buys its first T2 constructor from Tech instead.

Common mistakes

  • Losing the first T2 units to a blunder.
  • Building constructors before units while the front is under pressure.
  • No anti-air when the bombers come.

Works with. Supports both fronts and gets energy from Pond. Teammates are expected to send Geo metal.

Players disagree on. Who gives the fronts their T2 constructors: most say Geo, some say Tech. It varies by lobby.

Many agree on the first T2 units; opinions split on the constructors. On r/beyondallreason: Whose job is it to give T2 to front on Isthmus? (Oct 2025) · Isthmus meta, please explain (Nov 2025) · What on Cortex counters Sharpshooters at Geo? (Jan 2026)

POSITION 8 and 16 ON THE MAP

Beach sea

Sea, long beach side.

The job

Buy a constructor (maybe a rez bot) and send the commander straight into the water.

You are on the sea first: use that time to pressure the enemy’s cove, keep their sea off its geothermal, and take the island with Air’s help.

Against an equal opponent it is a slow loss over time, so the team should help upgrade its 4 mexes.

Common mistakes

  • Losing destroyers deep in enemy water.
  • Flying units to the sea on a path the enemy can predict.

Works with. Needs Air for the island, and the team for mex upgrades.

Players disagree on. A few say this sea wins more often in high-rated games.

A few threads agree. On r/beyondallreason: Is Isthmus beach sea vs geo sea balanced? (Nov 2025) · Isthmus geo sea hate thread (Apr 2026) · Upgrade your sea (Aug 2025)
